Leoni, 2012 receipient of Governor’s Service Award, offers real-life advice for nonporift governance model
(Concord, NH | May 12, 2016) – Kirk Leoni, a Principal at Nathan Wechsler & Company, helped local nonprofits understand the ethical issues that accompany every donation, large or small. A panelist at Saint Anselm College’s Excellence in Governance Certificate Program in partnership with the NH Center for Nonprofits, Leoni addressed the ethics and accountability of the modern nonprofit board at the Center’s convening on May 6. Leoni has 40+ years’ experience as a CPA and business adviser specializing in nonprofits, among other industries.
“The field of nonprofit fundraising is complex and has many nuances to keep in mind, but most important are the so-called ‘golden rules,’ which we discussed during the program.” said Leoni, who currently sits on several nonprofit boards in the Greater Concord Community. “Nonprofit organizations must do what they say they’re going to do; never accept gifts they cannot deliver on based on clear donor expectations; and a nonprofit organization’s ethical obligation is to steward the gift in the manner the donor has agreed to.”
Leoni’s participation in the educational event, which was held in partnership with the NH Center for Nonprofits, is part of his firm’s emphasis on giving back. It provides substantial in-person and financial support to nearly 100 organizations that further the values and principles its employees hold dear.
Leoni joined Nathan Wechsler & Company in 1985, and since then has donated his time to: Canterbury Shaker Village, where he is currently chairman of its board of trustees; Child and Family Services, where he serves as treasurer as well as a member of the board; Concord Chamber of Commerce and its Finance Committee, the Hoffman-Haas Fellowship program as a mentor; Tillotson Corporation; NH Audubon; Concord Community Music School; Granite United Way; Leadership NH as past chair; New England Peer Review as past chair; NH Public Radio past chair; Southport Youth Sailing Foundation; and Weare School District. He is a CPA and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts Isenberg School of Business. He received the 2012 Governor of New Hampshire’s Volunteer Service Award, the NH Board Impact Award from the NH Center for Non-profits in 2014, and has published several works devoted to financial management.
In partnership with the NH Center for Nonprofits, the Excellence in Governance seminar program is designed to enrich the knowledge of nonprofit board and staff leaders across New Hampshire so they will provide leadership and decision-making in accordance with best practices of ethics in governance. The program focuses on the stewardship of the organization in assuring ethical behavior and providing sound fiscal oversight.
