Millennials are rapidly approaching the point where they will make up the largest portion of the US workforce. As such, manufacturers should be considering how to attract millennial sellers to their teams. In a recent article for Manufacturing Business Technology, Pamela Hammers offers some tips for attracting, hiring, and retaining millennial team members.
- Consider how you present your company – Millennials are known for seeking to work for companies that are forward-thinking. They desire a company with a strong culture and a focus on valuing and appreciating its workers. They want their employer to invest in new technologies. They seek to work for companies that provide benefits that fit their lifestyle, such as flexible hours and remote work. Consider implementing policies such as these, and also emphasizing them as you market yourself to prospective hires.
- Look beyond traditional hiring criteria – You should have a strong picture in mind of the personality and skill set you’re seeking to add to your team. As you comb through resumes, don’t automatically disregard young workers without sales experience. Consider how their other attributes—STEM degrees or experience with new technologies, for example—could fulfill the needs of your team.
- Train for more than just technology use – Many millennials have a strong technology background and can quickly pick up the new systems that you use. However, they might require more training in other areas, such as connecting with customers.
- Invest in your young workforce – Many millennials will be willing to stick with your company if you offer a clear pathway and opportunities for growth. Give clear guidance on how they can advance within your workforce. Seek ways to help them feel invested in your organization. These efforts will demonstrate that you are invested in them.
