In the construction industry, company leaders have an enormous impact on the culture of their organization. In a recent article for Construction Executive, author Randy Goruk examines three major mistakes that construction leaders can make that can have detrimental impacts on their company culture.
- Inconsistency – Construction leaders who fail to practice what they preach damage their organization’s culture. Leading by example, on the other hand, will result in consistency and fair treatment, which has a positive impact on employee morale and behavior.
- Passivity – Ignoring issues, rather than facing them head one, leads to trouble for construction leaders. Writing an issue off as small can allow it to snowball and become a big problem over time.
- Lack of Team Development – Failing to develop leadership internally can lead to corruption of your construction company’s culture. When a leader is forced to hire additional leadership from outside the company, oftentimes there are cultural clashes. Proactively developing leadership internally allows construction leaders to cultivate desirable traits that fit the organization’s culture.
