Kelli D’Amore and Ashley Major present at NH Public Charter School Association Best Practices Conference
(Concord, NH | March 24, 2016) – Two CPAs from Nathan Wechsler and Company, P.A., a full service accounting and tax firm with offices in Concord and Lebanon, are sharing their knowledge in the niche areas of charter school finance and fraud prevention as part of the firm’s commitment to community engagement. Kelli D’Amore and Ashley Major, both CPAs, presented at the Best Practices Conference in Salem at the Birches Academy of Academics and Arts, hosted by NHPSCA on Friday, March 18. The pair will take to the podium again on June 7 in partnership with Northway Bank for a Fraud Prevention seminar in Concord hosted by Orr & Reno.
“We always appreciate the opportunity to help organizations make smart financial decisions,” said D’Amore, principal at Nathan Wechsler. “Regulations can change and best practices can evolve, so raising awareness about important issues – especially around fraud prevention and charter school compliance – is an important way we serve our community.”
The charter school conference drew attendees from all over the state and was formatted into breakout sessions. Kelli and Ashley’s session was attended by 8 different school leaders, who learned about accounting and finance best practices, how to design appropriate internal controls and audit and tax compliance. Charter schools are public, tuition-free schools with unique programs and goals based on the educational needs and interests of a particular community. New Hampshire currently has 25 charter schools, each with varied and complex financial nuances.
Later this spring, the two CPAs will lend their expertise about fraud prevention at a special seminar hosted in partnership with Northway Bank. On June 7, D’Amore and Major will discuss identifying fraud risks and will examine current examples of common fraud areas with tips for how to prevent it through proper internal controls.
“There are several tools available to businesses to help prevent and detect fraud, as well as strict guidelines around what they can and can’t do when it comes to this important aspect of accounting,” said Major, supervising senior at Nathan Wechsler. “Each business and industry is unique when it comes to ways fraud may happen, but the impact is often crippling regardless of where you operate or what you do.”
D’Amore is a principal accountant and director of the firm’s nonprofit practice. She specializes in nonprofit mergers as well as construction and manufacturing industry tax and accounting. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Southern New Hampshire University. D’Amore is a member of the Capital Region Board of the NH Charitable Foundation, the MSA Advisory Board at UNH, Goodwill Industries of Northern New England, and is a graduate of the 2007 class of Leadership Greater Concord.
Major is a supervising senior accountant and specializes in mergers and acquisitions, due diligence, and nonprofit and manufacturing industry accounting. She earned both her Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting and a Master’s of Science degree in Accounting from Siena College. Major is a board member and treasurer of YWCA New Hampshire.
